LEBANON — Jim Faulkner has been in the business of constructing patios and patio covers for 35 years but he’s seldom been more excited than he has been this past year.

Faulkner, who owns Pacific Crest Patio Construction Company in Lebanon, has added the Solara Adjustable Patio Cover to his inventory. He thinks its the perfect fit for the Northwest.

“It’s brand new to this area,” said Faulkner, 61, who sells just about everything available in the way of patio covers and awnings. “They’ve been available for about a year. We’re kind of the last to get it.”

Pacific Crest is the sole distributor in Oregon at this time and Faulkner says his experiences at home shows tell him the product will be popular.

“With the economy the way it is now there are only a few out there that we have actually installed but the response at shows has been encouraging and sales have picked up,” he said.

The cover, which was created in Israel and has become popular worldwide, can be opened or closed to let in more light or provide shade. Faulkner says it can be great protection for a patio and patio accessories against the elements.

“It allows you to use your patio all year round,” he said. “It can even be controlled sectionally so that one side is closed and the other open.”

He said he is working to establish sales in the Willamette Valley. Other dealers, when they are established, will cover the rest of the state.

“I work with it from Eugene to Portland,” Faulkner said.

Solara covers come in any size a customer might need according to Faulkner who also said there are numerous configurations.

What Faulkner likes most about the cover is that it installs easily. He said he and one other person can set up the patio cover in about two days.

“It didn’t take their rep very long to train us on it. I think the hardest one I’ll ever do was the first one. It was a circular configuration,” he said. “But it was really a piece of cake.”

Pacific Crest Patio Construction has been serving mostly the mid-valley since Faulkner started it in his home in the 1970s. He says almost all of his work is in the Lebanon, Albany and Corvallis area.

What excites him about the Solara product is that it offers customers more than many traditional products. He admits, however, it is an expensive choice.

“It’s not real cheap but prices for this type of product have dropped quite a bit. For what it does the value is good,” Faulkner said. “It’s aluminum and once it’s up it doesn’t require much maintenance.”

He noted that it allows people to adjust to the time of year to use their patios no matter what the weather. According to Faulkner the Solara can provide total shade and ventilation on warmer days due to the chimney effect the partially opened cover creates.

In winter he said it’s heavy duty construction can withstand the elements.

Pacific Crest Patio Construction can be reached at (541) 928-5070 in Albany and (541) 258-5100 in Lebanon.

“I’m excited about this,” Faulkner says. “Everyone who’s seen it seems to like it.”
